If you have been convicted of a motoring crime then you might worry about how this is going to affect your ability to get car insurance in the future. This is certainly not an unfounded concern, since insurance providers are always assessing risk when calculating the price of a policy. If you’ve had any previous motoring convictions then it’s likely that mainstream insurance providers either won’t want to offer you a policy, or they’ll quote you an unaffordable price.

Who gets convicted most?

Men are convicted of motoring crimes more than women. According to 2013 statistics by the AA, men are one and a half times more likely to have a driving conviction than women, and twice as likely to have a conviction for drink driving. By far the most common type of motoring conviction is for speeding.

Although men have more driving convictions than women, the gap is closing. A decade ago, 11 per cent of women had driving convictions whereas today that figure is 15 per cent (statistics again from the AA).

Other factors that affect the price of car insurance

  • Your age – Younger drivers between the age of 17-24 are much more likely to be involved in accidents. Therefore, all other factors being equal, younger people will always pay more for a policy.
  • Where your vehicle is kept – The ideal place to keep your car is a locked garage, but not everybody has this luxury. If your car is kept on a public road it’s at a higher risk of vandalism and theft, and you can therefore expect to pay more.
  • Where you live – People who live in high crime areas will be considered a higher risk by insurance providers and this will be reflected in the cost of the policy.

Where to get car insurance when you have a motoring criminal conviction

Although it’s possible to get insurance from a mainstream provider if you have a motoring conviction, it’s not the ideal option. Instead, you should seek out insurance providers that specialise in insurance for convicted drivers. Specialist insurance providers will take your unique circumstances into account and will be able to provide a policy at a price that’s fair.
